• Prepare your phone

If your phone is network locked, make sure to unlock it before boarding. Your existing service provider should be able to assist you. There are four service providers in India and all of them offer SIM cards in different sizes depending on the phone.

  • Get a SIM card at the airport

To ease the process, at all Arrival Sections of the International Airports there are counters to sell Indian SIM cards. You will need your passport, visa, and a photograph to get a sim card at these counters (the documents may vary as per the TRAI’s updates). Your documents are used by the carriers to register the SIM with the user’s name and passport number. The stores will also help you to choose from a more flexible range of plans that better suit your needs at a lower price.

  • Choose the carrier and mobile data plan

There are four major cell service providers in India: BSNL by the Government of India, Airtel by Bharati Airtel Limited, Vi by Vodafone Idea Limited, and Jio by Jio Platforms. These carriers offer a range of prepaid packages with 3G/4G support for both short and long-term availability, ranging from daily, weekly to monthly.

  • Top-up

There are Top Up counters available in and around Pondicherry.

  • Activate

SIM card activation may vary depending on which device and carrier you are using. Prepaid SIM cards for tourists usually offer a 30-day validity after each top-up. You can check your mobile balance and validity via these USSD codes:

BSNL: *121#

Airtel: *123#

Vi: *111#

Jio: *333#

The following are the simple steps to get your Indian SIM card and mobile data plan connection.
